AICE Memorable Moment # 12:
Juggernaut Wins Elite Chicken Wing Eating Title
Chris Patton a virtual unknown in Competitive Eating competes in the finals of the Columbus Wing Bowl and decisively beats a field of World Class Gurgitators. Chris “The Juggernaut of Eating” Patton broke the previous record by downing 90 Monster Chicken Wings (closer to a piece of Chicken in total weight than a standard Chicken Wing) and sent notice that he is one of America’s finest and is clearly the “General of Chicken Wings”.
AICE Memorable Moment # 11:
Maurizio wins Nations most competitive Chicken Wing Eating Contest: Pittsburgh Wing Championship Series (WCS)
Pete “Broken Wing” Maurizio not only won the Nation’s top Chicken Wing Eating Contest, but he defeated the infamous villain and defending champ Ted “Butthead” Wilson. The mild mannered Maurizio soon became a crowd favorite as he showed great humility in winning the title and restoring the notion that “good guys do sometimes finish first”.
AICE Memorable Moment # 10:
Chowhound’s Kodak moment at the Clinton Station Diner in Clinton, New Jersey
During the “Burger Wars” that raged in 2005 The Clinton Station Diner in Clinton New Jersey along with AICE, sanctioned the Worlds Biggest Hamburger Team Eating Championship”. This contest, which featured 6 teams of 3 Eaters a piece, all vying for the honor of defeating the great Zeus Burger. The team of Dominic “The Doginator” Cardo, Gentleman Joe Menchetti and Arnie “Chowhound” Chapman, also known as the “Tri-State Titans” barely finished the 12.5 monster in the 1 hour 15 minutes allocated. (Controversy still continues regarding the actual weight of the Burger, where Chapman claims a total weight closer to 17 lbs). Two seconds after the Titans swallowed down the last bit of the Zeus Burger, Chowhound launched a stream of multi-colored “food sweat” which horrified and delighted spectators and media alike (Not to mention the two wide-eyed youngsters who were sitting right next to them). The camera folks did a fantastic job of capturing the seconds prior and after the “infamous” incident, thus making this a true “Kodak moment” for the Titans, Clinton Station Dinner and AICE (and especially for Chapman). Those familiar with the contest still wonder who got the best of whom that day. Looking at Chapman, you would have to say that the Zeus Burger may have had the last word, so to speak.
AICE Memorable Moment # 9:
Angel Chirobaga dancing on his way to victory at the 2nd annual Great Irish Fair Corned Beef Sandwich Eating Contest
9/10/05-Angel “Troglodyte” Chirobaga who had tied the great Chowhound Chapman in only his first attempt at Competitive Eating at the 2nd Annual Chinese Dumpling Eating Contest a month prior, proved not only to be a fantastic Eater but also proved himself to be a great showman. “Troglodyte” (A nickname given to him by his mother which means “Cave Man” because of his approach to food) easily won the contest by devouring 4.5 1/2 lb Corned Beef Sandwiches in Six Minutes (Picnic Style) at the Great Irish Fair in Coney Island, Brooklyn New York. Angel, who is of Ecuadorian Descent, danced his way to victory, much to the delight of the audience. When asked about strategy, Angel responded; “I will do a more Celtic type of dance next year (versus the Latin style he did) which will not only guarantee me victory against all comers but should propel me to a six sandwich performance…”
AICE Memorable Moment # 8:
Media frenzy surrounds Hunk of Hunger
12/18/05- Ian "The Invader" Hickman first contacted AICE at the beginning of 2005 when he was a senior at the University of Kentucky majoring in Journalism. Ian's goal was very simple: to become a great competitive eater. However, because of his good looks, southern charm, the media could not leave this kid alone. Shortly after his first Professional Eating Contest he attracted the interest of several Lexington Kentucky media outlets (TV, Newspaper, Radio, pilot TV shows, MTV, etc.)
What started out as a reputation among family and friends as a ferocious eater, quickly evolved into a restraining order from several Lexington Kentucky Buffets never to enter their
restaurants again. In Ian's first professional contest at SpiceFest, Ian battled and beat several top ranked eaters. Within a year, the Virginia native has captured the National Spoon Bread and National Potato Latke Championships and has achieved a ranking of 9 in the Nation. Ian will be appearing on MTV's True Life in Feb 2006.
AICE Memorable Moment # 7:
Lyle Shocks’em in Coshocton
4/27/05-The world of Competitive Eating finds out who Mark “The Human Vacuum” is. Lyle, having garnered both fame and infamy at the Columbus Wing Bowl (ties the record for the most wings eaten in the qualifying rounds and for having a reversal of fortune in the finals) approached the First Annual “The War of the Wings” with the belief that he could “Get R Done”. Lyle didn’t seem to care that the winners from America’s top two Chicken Wing Eating Contests (Columbus Wing Bowl and Pittsburgh’s Wing Championship Series) and other decorated Food Warriors would also be competing. Since this event, Lyle has entered the ranks of America’s Elite Eaters and has proven to be among the best.
AICE Memorable Moment # 6:
Belinda Gould breaks Corner Bar Record
12/5/05-Belinda “Go Get’m” Gould, a 41 year old Mother and part-time deli worker breaks long standing Chili Dog Record (23 yo record). Apparently, Ms. Gould had attempted this feat on two previous occasions recording 20 Chili Dogs her first time and 28 Chili Dogs her second time. Because of this, Ms. Gould deserves recognition for her amazing determination and perseverance and has earned the Moniker , Belinda “Go Get’m” Gould for not giving up. Also, this amazing performance has earned her a national ranking of 23rd by the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters.
AICE Memorable Moment # 5:
Tough Streets of El Paso
9/4/2005-In what might be described as the most exciting and physically demanding event in competitive speed eating in 2005, Pro Eaters Chris “The American” Schlesinger and “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti arrived in El Paso Texas believing that a 1-2 finish was a certainty, despite Chairman Chowhound’s warning that they will need to be at the top of their game if they expected to finish in the money. As predicted by the Hound, a strong contingent of Mexican- American Food Warriors stormed the scene, proudly proclaiming their ability in this difficult food discipline. After a five-way tie at the end of regulation time ( five Minutes), Food Warriors had to battle an additional two more rounds to determine the top three finishers. Eventual winner, Joe Menchetti stated unequivocally; “I think this is one title I wont be defending next year,..”
AICE Memorable Moment #4
Coondog vs. the Black Bear
2/14/05-The electrifying Dave Coondog O’Karma who is a frequent guest on Cleveland’s “Big Chuck & Little John Show” could not find a human being who was willing to challenge him in pizza. Lacking any human opponents, the charismatic and unpredictable Coondog challenged “Lakota” the Bear who was a character in the Disney Film Jungle Book. To nobody’s surprise (especially those who have challenged him in the past) Coondog came away victorious and achieved the status of being the first Competitive Eater to defeat a Bear. As a result of this amazing feat, native Ohioans have now replaced the saying; “I’m as hungry as a Bear” and are now saying, I’m as hungry as a Coondog!” Fans, Friends and frightened children wonder what surprises the electrifying Coondog has in store for 2006…Coondog' O’Karma vs. Elephant… you never know.
AICE Memorable Moment # 3:
Big Italian Sausages and the Village People
7/16/05-AICE opens with World Italian Sausage Eating Championship before the Village People take the stage. Apparently, the Village People attributed the motivation they felt on this particular day, to the World Italian Sausage Eating Contest sanctioned by AICE. A spectator, Brian S. was quoted as saying; “It doesn’t get any better than this, Big Sausages and the Village People, it’s beautiful!” This event was many of the sausage-like titles won by Gentlemen Joe Menchetti during the year and is a man who seeks more wiener titles in 2006.
AICE Memorable Moment #2:
20 year old College Co-ed first to Eat Denny’s 11.5 Burger
1/12/05-Kate “The Great” Stelnick", from Princeton New Jersey, a college co-ed from the College of New Jersey, with a group of friends traveled four hours to Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield Pennsylvania. The slim, attractive 20 year old accomplished what many eaters had once thought to be one of the truly “untouchable eating challenges” on the globe: Consume the 11.5 lb Monster known as the "Denny Burger". This Hamburger is 6lbs of (post) cooked beef and five pounds of toppings. Apparently, Stelnick was inspired by Coondog O'Karma and Chowhound Chapman who she saw several days prior on a Food Network special entitled "Protein Power" Which took place at Denny’s. This memorable moment, more than any other memorable moment in independent Competitive Eating for the year 2005, has created more questions than answers. After a few high profile appearances, including “Celebrity Judge” at the Clinton Station Diner Team Burger Challenge, the Tony Danza Show, Kate “The Great” has many people wondering why she hasn’t competed in other events despite many attractive offers to participate….
AICE Memorable Moment #1:
Coondog Vs. Kobi 33 seconds vs. 34 seconds
7/5/05-The Great Takeru Kobayashi and Coondog O’Karma, friends since they first met in Coney Island several years ago, just prior to Kobayashi’s amazing 50 Hot Dog performance. Kobayashi, at this point was a relatively unknown Eater who remembered O’Karma’s friendliness and charisma. In January of 2005, Coondog had made a pilgrimage to Japan where he sought the secrets of the much respected Japanese Eaters. It appears that Coondog may have picked up a few secrets when he narrowly missed beating the “Great One” in a Pizza Eating Demonstration a day after his fifth straight Hot Dog Victory. Kobayashi completed his Pizza Pie in 33 seconds while Coondog finished his in 34 seconds. It’s worth noting that Coondog had previously downed the same sized Pizza Pie in 29 seconds on Cleveland’s Big Chuck & Little John Show…. Coondog’s hospitality was also shown when he arranged with the Cleveland Indians for Kobi to throw out the first pitch and meet the players: A truly memorable moment for the Prince of Eating and for AICE.
