Quarterly AICE will feature an Independent Eater. If there is someone out there who has been competing in independent eating events and would like AICE to turn it's spotlight on their eating accomplishments and any personal or biographical information, please send to AICE. If there is someone who wishes to nominate an eater, please feel free to do so. Also, AICE will be actively seeking eaters to highlight for this section. Non-Independent Eaters will only be featured when they become Independent. Winter -2006
Spot Light On Michael “Rough Gut” Rogers
“Rough Gut” is a two time State of Kansas Jalapeño Eating Champion. In the 2005 Wichita State Fair, “Rough Gut” eclipsed any known standard for the raw five minute Jalapeño Eating Contest by devouring an unbelievable 27 raw Jalapeño’s. According to AICE Chairman Arnie “Chowhound” Chapman, one must consider the fact the National Speed Eating Championship in El Paso this past year (which is also a five minute contest) was won with 17 Raw Jalapeños. Also, “The winner of that event is the highly regarded New England Champion, Gentleman Joe Menchetti who went on to Laredo Texas and won the Long distance pickled Jalapeño Eating Championship with 105. Twenty-seven raw Jalapeños is a mark of a very special or a pain resistant Eater,” Chapman jokes. “Rough Gut” is a Professor at Wichita State University Department of Kinesiology and Sport Studies where he also the Research Director for the Center of Physical Activity and Aging. Dr. Rogers enjoys running and eating peppers but states that he rarely combines these activities (which his fellow runners appreciate). Expect Rough Gut to pamper his stomach this summer by competing in other types contests besides peppers.
